Falls are the primary cause of mortality for the elderly, leading to debilitating injuries and loss of mobility. Sadly, geriatric medicine is an unpopular specialty not only amongst doctors, but nobody is really ever excited to see a geriatric doctor – despite the fact that they are primarily trained to both recognize and treat this most common and dangerous condition.
Enter Pilates! You can actually work on this incredibly important facet of health and aging by yourself. Care for the feet, balance training, and several related modalities (lots of walking, at the very least - ideally dancing as well!) should begin as early as possible and must be a daily practice in order to become deeply ingrained habit, providing an invaluable bulwark against the aging process.
Begin by simply balancing on foot when you brush your teeth. Next, ask your Pilates instructor for a balance building regimen customized to your particular strengths and weaknesses. Definitely work up to balance board work – both challenging and fun! Happy practicing!
